Prayers for the journey

Regardless of the journey you walk, God meets you at every turn in the road. Sometimes, it is a misty path; visibility is poor, moving forward is cautiously done. At other times, the sunshine is bright but the road switches back and forth. Regardless of the condition of journey, God is there to lead, protect and encourage us forward.

Consider incorporating Prayers for the Journey into your devotions.

Come, Lord Jesus (the prayer of invitation)

With this prayer, you invite Him to come into all that life is for you, at the moment. Perhaps you have made a mess with broken pieces all over your floor. “Come, Lord, into this mess I have made.” And, when we ask Him to come, He comes. And, when we ask him to do something, He always does something…and He never does less than we ask.

Abba, I belong to You (the prayer of relationship)

Abba, I belong to You, the prayer of relationship, reaffirms that we are His responsibility. We are His children and He is our Father. Abba is a term of respectful relationship.

I trust You (the prayer of commitment)

Knowing we are His, we commit our trust in Him. He will be faithful to all He has promised, even when we are not faithful to do all we have promised.

I surrender to You (the prayer of relinquishment)

The only way to fully trust Him is surrender. Who we are and what we carry must become fully His. The story of Moses and his rod illustrates this so well. Moses surrendered his speech impediment and fugitive background – he became God’s man. Moses carried a staff, as he was a shepherd in the wilderness. After meeting with the Lord, the Bible says that he took “the staff of God in his hand” (Exodus 4:20). The staff of Moses became the staff of God. All we are and all we carry must become God’s through relinquishment. Something held with open hands is no less held.

You are more than enough (the prayer of contentment)

You are more than enough, the prayer of contentment, naturally follows surrender. He is more than enough for us today. He is totally sufficient for every need. Paul prayed three times for deliverance from Satanic attack; would it not be the Lord’s will to rescue His children from these experiences? But, in Paul’s case, God allowed this because it kept Paul from exalting himself (2 Corinthians 12:9). God gave Paul sufficient grace in the setting of unanswered prayer. Until we come to the end of ourselves, we will never know God is more than enough for everything.

Set my love in order (the prayer of devotion)

The culmination is Set my love in order, the prayer of devotion. Oh, that we would come to the day when we are devoted to Him as He is to us.

The prayers begin with invitation and end with devotion. The path to devotion is clear: invite the Lord to come, recognize your relationship with Him, commit your way to Him, relinquish what you are carrying and love Him with sincere devotion. This is the pathway of blessing.
